They Can’t Be That Simpleminded…Can They?
So here’s what happened. I walked into my boss’s office only to have forgotten what I wanted to tell him. (Typical half-senior moment) As I walked back out, I said over my shoulder, “I’ve got to give up the crack! I can’t remember a thing!”
But he was all like, “don’t let people hear you say that.”
I looked at him incredulously. “You really believe that people are gonna believe I really am on crack, based on that statement?”
“Yeah,” he said.
“So people are going to assume from my words that not only am I using crack, but that I’m dumb enough to attribute my forgetfulness to this crack use publicly while standing outside my boss’s office?“
He just nodded.
“Well if someone is really stupid enough to believe that I actually use crack and am announcing it far as wide, he or she SHOULD report me to HR! I dare him/her! I double dare him/her! That would be the most colossal mistake of his or her career! No one can be that stupid!!
“It’s ’cause I’m black, right? Only a black person would be stupid enough to both use crack and announce said usage to her boss. That’s what this is about! They think I’m a black, crack-addicted moron, right?!
OK, cool! To all people listening who might believe I am an incredibly stupid black, crack addict, please feel free to report me to HR immediately!!” I said loudly, still standing in his doorway.
My boss just shook his head. I think I’m giving him an ulcer.
