Rights & Wrongs of Crib Bedding

Got a question for the wise internets…

What’s the deal on crib bedding?

Months before Zizi arrived, I purchased a beautiful crib bedding set. Glenna Jean Soho.

I proceeded to make up the crib and there it sat looking so pretty, that is until the day that we put Zara in it to sleep. At that point, we had to remove the quilt, the bumpers and the pillows in order to follow the AAP guidelines that say that you should have nothing in the bed except the baby.

OK, so for the past 7 months we have had the goodies of the bedding set stored in the closet gathering dust. Yet recently I was looking at pictures of one of my friends’ 10 month old baby sleeping in her crib. There in the crib were crib bumpers! I was so geeked.

“When was it OK to put the crib bumpers back into the crib?” I asked.

“I never took them out,” she said simply.

And in my head, I was like OMG, aren’t you supposed to take them out? Isn’t it dangerous to leave them in? It was then that I realized that I had probably been caught up in new mother hysteria.

Even still, I’m hesitant about putting the bumpers and quilt back into the bed, and here Zizi is almost 8 months old. What if she smothers, I keep thinking.

So tell me wise internets, is it time to take the bedding out of the closet and return it to its rightful place?

Heee! With the first, I took the bumper out as soon as he could just barely think about possibly moving, and never put it back in. I also made sure he was ALWAYS on his back until after he turned a year.

With the twins, I was too tired to put bumpers in, and encouraged them to sleep on their stomachs the day they hit 6 mos . . .

In any event, I had heard that you take the bumpers out at 5 months, lest they use them to climb out of the crib . . . which is in opposition to the advice that you don’t use the bumpers until they can free themselves from suffocating. Of course, if they can free themselves from suffocating, probably they could stop themselves from bumping their head too often, too.

Let’s face it, bumpers exist merely ’cause they look pretty . . . And yours are very pretty, so I think you should put them in, at least long enough to take lots of cute pictures!

Nice. We also left our bumpers on. Never removed them. We found our crib bedding online at: SpecialtyLinens.com
Give them a try. They’re a great company with fantastic selection and pricing.

I put them in before they were born, and they’re still in there today (at nearly 17 months old). Ever since they could roll, they’d sleep hugging them, often with their face against them and have been fine. I decided it was one of the things I just wasn’t going to worry about. They aren’t too thin, but they aren’t pillow-like either. I’d heard to take them out once they can pull out because they can use them to try to get over the edge, but really they just smash down when they stand on them (which isn’t often).

Max will be 8 months old on the 27th and his bumpers are still in. they may go soon as he has started to pull on them, but we are playing it by ear. I think she would be fine and would probably enjoy looking at them since they will be new to her.

Carlton had bumpers in his crib from the time he came home (6 months) until 27 months. I only took them out because it was a pain changing the sheet. they were squishy and he was not able to use them to climb out. He didn’t show any interest in a blanket/quilt until about the same time. He now sleeps with his quilt in the crib everynight - but he doesn’t sleep under it, he has to have it folded in half and in just the right spot - then he sleeps on it.

Jackson has his bumper in the crib (came home at 7 months). It will stay until I get tired of it or he uses it to stand on - this one is more sturdy than Carlton’s was. We don’t give him a blanket and probably won’t until at least a year, but if he shows no interest I won’t bother with it.

Addie had bumpers in her crib from day one. I took them out the day she could pull herself to standing and stood on her bumpers to get a higher vantage point! That was at about 8 months. I have to say I hate that the bumper is out…especially when I go to check her at night and her little face is smushed against the hard bars of her crib but she seems fine. I use and have always covered her with a blanket at night with no problem,…iI find her hugging it and her bunny most of the time. And she has stuffed”friends” in her crib that she hugs at night and talks to in the morning when she wakes up.

We left them in the cribs with both of our kids and only took them out when the crib converted to a toddler bed. Both the kids loved them and often snuggled up to them for comfort. I think i did take them out once with our son, but after one night of his foot constantly getting stuck between the slats I put them back in.

I took the bumpers out when Ethan started to roll and replaced them with breathable mesh bumpers I found online. He’s two and a half and I never put the cute bumpers back in-he’s still got the breathable ones. He can’t stand on them to get leverage, but they keep his arms and legs from getting stuck outside the bars.

Maybe I succumbed to new mom hysteria, but I figure it’s better to be safe than sorry.

We had them in when we brought Dylan home at 5 months but took them out when we found him under them one day. We never put them back.

Felicia will be 11 months in January. She started sleeping in her crib at 3 months with a breathable blanket and padded bumpers. She loves to sleep with her head pushed right up to the corner of the crib. I was terrified. I use to lie awake watching her on the baby monitor terrified her head would get stuck between the bumpers and bars! I rolled two heavy blankets fitted around the crib and then tightly tied the bumpers on. This prevented her head from going beyond the bumpers and gave her head extra cushion. She also sleeps with a very soft breathable blanket. Again terrified…I would lie awake watching her on the baby monitor! But she never pulled the blanket over her head. Today she sleeps on her stomach, still in the corner with the padded bumpers and her favorite blanket.
